I had wanted to visit Chicago for years, and when my husband had a work conference there, I jumped at the chance to tag along and turn it into a proper couples trip. What followed were some of the best four days we’ve had as a couple — great food, biking along the lakefront, Hamilton on Broadway, world-class museums, and a city that completely exceeded my expectations.

If Chicago isn’t already on your couples travel bucket list, let this post change that.

Getting there & getting around Chicago

Flying in

We flew into Midway Airport (MDW), which is generally cheaper than O’Hare and, depending on where you’re staying, can be just as convenient. An Uber from Midway into downtown was quick and painless — around 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.

Getting around the city

Chicago is a surprisingly bikeable city. We rented Divvy bikes for exploring the lakefront and neighborhoods — one of the best decisions of the trip. The lakefront path is flat, beautiful, and goes on for miles. For evenings and longer trips, Uber and Lyft are plentiful and affordable.

Chicago CityPASS: is it worth it?

Our Uber driver actually recommended the Chicago CityPASS when we arrived, so we looked it up at the hotel and bought it that evening. Smart move.

The CityPASS covers 5 top Chicago attractions over 9 days. If you plan to visit even 2 of the included attractions, you’ll likely break even — visiting 3 or more and it’s a clear win. We visited three of the five: the Willis Tower, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Shedd Aquarium.

Our verdict: absolutely worth it for a 3–4 day trip. Skip the ticket lines too, which is a bonus in peak season.

Top attractions for a Chicago couples weekend

Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) — Skydeck

The view from the Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower is legitimately breathtaking. On a clear day you can see four states. The glass-floored ledges are terrifying in the best possible way — great for photos. Book tickets in advance or use CityPASS to skip the line.

The Art Institute of Chicago

One of the best art museums in the country, full stop. We spent about three hours and still felt like we barely scratched the surface. The Impressionist collection is world-class. Allow at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes. Included in CityPASS.

Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd is enormous and excellent — easily a half-day attraction. The dolphin shows and beluga whale exhibits are highlights. Great for couples and families alike. Included in CityPASS.

Millennium Park & Cloud Gate (“The Bean”)

Free to visit and genuinely iconic. The Bean (officially Cloud Gate) is one of those things that’s even more impressive in person than in photos. Millennium Park is a beautiful place to spend an hour — especially in good weather with the fountain going.

Lakefront & Navy Pier

Rent Divvy bikes and ride the lakefront trail. It’s one of the most scenic urban cycling routes anywhere in the US. Navy Pier is touristy but worth a quick walk — the views back toward the skyline are excellent.

Hamilton at the CIBC Theatre

We had tickets to see Hamilton and it lived up to every bit of the hype. If you’re visiting Chicago and theatre is your thing, check what’s playing at the Broadway in Chicago venues — the lineup is consistently excellent. Book well in advance.

Where to eat in Chicago

We had reservations at four upscale restaurants and every one delivered. Chicago’s food scene is seriously underrated — it punches well above its weight nationally.

What to know about dining in Chicago

  • Make reservations in advance for any popular spot, especially on weekends
  • Deep dish pizza is a tourist trap that’s also legitimately delicious — do it at least once (Lou Malnati’s or Giordano’s)
  • The Randolph Street “Restaurant Row” and River North are the main upscale dining corridors
  • Fulton Market has become one of the hottest food neighborhoods in the city

What to pack for a Chicago couples trip

Chicago weather is notoriously variable — we had three days of sunny 75°F and two rainy days in the same trip. Packing for a couples trip here means being ready for both nice dinners and lots of walking (we ended up doing a lot of biking too).

For sightseeing & daytime exploring

  • Two pairs of jeans (one casual, one dark wash for evenings)
  • Jean shorts for warm days
  • Workout gear (for the gym or an early lakefront run)
  • A black cami — the most versatile piece in any packing list
  • A pop of color — I brought a mustard yellow short sleeve that got a lot of use
  • Comfortable walking sandals (I wore my Birkenstocks all day every day)
  • Prana travel hat for sun protection
  • Lightweight rain jacket — non-negotiable for Chicago
  • Compact umbrella

For evenings, dinner & theatre

  • A midi striped skirt (I paired mine with the black cami — one of my favorite travel outfits)
  • Two long dresses for nicer dinner reservations
  • A black romper — works for dinner, works for theatre
  • Comfortable wedge sandals by Clarks — I walked miles in these and my feet never complained

Travel essentials

  • Portable power bank — you’ll drain your phone navigating and taking photos
  • Reusable tote bag for shopping and the market

Quick tips for a Chicago couples weekend

  • 🎭 Book theatre tickets early — Hamilton and popular shows sell out months ahead
  • 🚴 Rent Divvy bikes — the lakefront trail is one of the best urban cycling experiences in the US
  • ✈️ Consider Midway over O’Hare — often cheaper and easier for downtown hotels
  • 🎟️ Buy CityPASS at your hotel — skip the attraction ticket lines and save money if visiting 2+ included spots
  • 🌧️ Pack a rain jacket regardless of forecast — Chicago weather changes fast
  • 🍕 Do deep dish once — it’s touristy and worth it. Lou Malnati’s is the classic.
  • 🌅 Walk the lakefront at sunrise — most beautiful thing in the city and zero crowds

Frequently asked questions

Is Chicago a good destination for a couples trip?

Absolutely. Chicago has a world-class food scene, outstanding museums, beautiful architecture, a stunning lakefront, and a thriving performing arts scene. It’s an especially great couples destination if you enjoy city walking, great restaurants, and cultural experiences.

How many days do you need in Chicago?

Three to four days is a great first visit for couples. You can hit the major highlights (The Bean, Willis Tower, at least one world-class museum, lakefront biking) without feeling rushed, and still have time for great dinners and an evening out.

What’s the best time of year to visit Chicago as a couple?

May through October is ideal. Summer (June–August) is peak season with warm weather and lots happening. September and October offer beautiful fall weather with smaller crowds. Avoid January–February unless you specifically want the deep-winter experience.

Is the Chicago CityPASS worth buying?

Yes, if you’re visiting 2 or more of the included attractions. It covers 5 attractions over 9 days and also lets you skip ticket lines. We visited 3 of the 5 and it was clearly a good deal.

What airport should I fly into for Chicago?

Midway (MDW) is often cheaper and is closer to downtown Chicago — great if you’re staying in the Loop, River North, or South Loop. O’Hare (ORD) is larger with more flight options and is well connected by the Blue Line train.
