Almalfi Coast from the Ferry

This was our last year to have a two week school break during the fall. We decided to go big and take our first European adventure with the kiddos. We carefully planned out an Italian itinerary that we hoped would keep everyone happy, and away we went! Jeremy and I both love Italy, and thought it would be a great introduction to Europe for two kids who had never traveled so far. Plus, I was in the middle of reading the Percy Jackson series to Audrey which has loads of references to Roman Gods. Jeremy and I have been before, and there is SO much to see. This trip was about being on vacation, and we knew if we did too much “touring” our kids might not ever want to come back. We wanted them to see the culture and some of the magnificence that is Italy, but figured they can come back when they are older to appreciate all of the art and history available in this beautiful country. We decided to focus more on what they are comfortable with in the beginning (nature) and then end in Rome. Our itinerary started in cute little town of Minori on the Amalfi Coast. After a brief stop to tour the ruins of Pompeii, we made our way to the countryside village of Paciano, Umbria to stay on an olive farm. After relaxing and boating around the vacation area in and around Lake Trasamiento, visiting cheese makers and wineries in Tuscany and seeing the beautiful town of Orvieto, we finished our trip in Rome taking in as much as we could in our last few days of Italy.

We started on the Amalfi Coast in the town of Minori. It is a bit of a more low key area than Positano or Amalfi, and felt more “local” which is our vibe. We rented a cute little apartment on top of a coffee shop with a view of the sea. It was the perfect start to get over our jet lag and begin acclimating to the Italian way of life. My kids are beach kids and starting near water was a no brainer for us. As we woke and climbed down the stairs to the street we ordered cappuccinos for all (the kids thought this was very “grown up”). The funny proprietor offered teaspoons of limoncello before coffee to the kids, which we all thought a bit hilarious. We explored our new town, let the kids dip their feet in the water.

About the Dreamer

I am always day dreaming of my next vacation. I love an adventurous trip. Researching and finding the perfect activity that will create a memorable experience for everyone on our vacation is a hobby for me. I am normally planning my next trip before I have left for a vacation. It might be camping, a farm stay in Italy, a motel in New Braunfels, a VRBO on an island or a fancy resort... I always have a new dream vacation on my mind.
